Banff to Kamloops

17th October

Set forth from Banff hotel after a great nights sleep in the cabin. Our aim was to get to Whistler and it soon became obvious that we would not make it on this leg of the journey. In fact we ended up at Kamloops. We traveled all day through dry terrain and there were signs of the dreaded beetle that kills off the pine trees every where.

As we moved steadily to the West the rain began to fall and apparently at thjis time of the year the moist air from the Pacific Ocean brings the rain as it hits the mountains. We arrived at Kamloops and Greg cooked dinner in the rain on the balcony.

We set out through Kicking Horse Pass and by 11:30 the clouds were moving in upon us as we passed by frozen lakes and traversed very steep gradients. On arrival at the town of Golden precariously perched into the mountain we went to a subway for lunch. We noted outside a billboard showing land for sale in this area for $85,000 Canadian, in 3/4 acre lots. Great if you were an eagle.

As we proceeded along the road it was noted the Autumn colors were finally becoming more brilliant. We soon came upon covered tunnels to offer motorists protection from avalanches and falling rocks.

Along the way we saw glaciers and waterfalls. We crept over the Rodger's Pass in the Sleet and the usual freezing conditions. On reaching the bottom of the valley on the other side the beautiful Lake Shuswan came into view and afforded a welcome stop to take it all in and read about the natives who hunted and fished there 5,000 BC.

When we arrived at Lake Louise the area was covered in snow and after lunch in the car park we shuffled and slid our way to the viewing point of the lake. After viewing and photos we strolled through the Chalet as though we belonged there and soon were back at the car and on our way to Banff to find a bed for the night.

As it turned out we were lucky to get a bed as the place was full of young people trying to find work in the skiing season. Getting the evening meal turned out to be a shuffle to work around the masses. We got a cabin in the end and enjoyed a good nights sleep.

After fixing the exhaust at Coles Tire and Repair Ltd we went for lunch at Huckleberry's with Paul and it was great fare with a treat to his famous Huckleberry pie. This site may give some information about these berries. Thanks a million Paul we enjoyed your hospitality, you are a great person.

It was to be snow all the way to Edmonton and once there we booked into the Hi Hostel and went to get some stores and prepare dinner. The kitchen at the hostel was a little disharmonious and one fellow border was totally of the planet and rude to others.
